River Ciane

Info and price

The Fiume Ciane e Saline di Siracusa Oriented Nature Reserve is a protected area established by the Region of Sicily that includes the course of the River Ciane and the wetlands of the Saline on the outskirts of the city of Syracuse.
The name Ciane derives from the Greek cyanos, κυανός, meaning “blue-green”, and refers to the particular colour of the water and papyrus in these areas.
Inside the reserve, there is a ring-shaped foot and cycle path of about 12 km.
Why visit?
Its fame is mainly due to the presence of papyrus, which grows wild on the banks. It seems that the presence of papyrus on the waterway dates back to the 3rd century B.C. when some plants arrived from Egypt, sent by Ptolemy II Philadelphus to his friend and ally Hieron II.
The river Ciane is associated with the famous Greek myth about the existence of the seasons.

The Cavagrande del Cassibile Oriented Nature Reserve is a protected area located in the municipalities of Avola, Noto and Siracusa, in the province of Siracusa, in the centre of the Iblei Valley.
It is the deepest canyon in Sicily, and is characterised by the course of the river Cassibile, the ancient Greek Kakyparis, which has created it over the millennia by digging deep gorges or canyons at different depths, reaching a maximum of 507 m.
Defended by the inaccessible sheer walls of the quarry and the proximity of the water, the Sicans, the first known inhabitants of this place, built a necropolis here.
An uncontaminated paradise, an essential stop for travellers who love hiking and nature reserves, a true earthly paradise full of colours, scents, history and tranquillity.

Old Noto and Carosello quarry

Info and price

Old Noto is the ancient settlement of Noto destroyed in the 1693 earthquake. Between the 14th and 16th centuries, it was one of the main cultural, military and economic centres of south-eastern Sicily. Surrounded by imposing walls (many of which are still standing) and deep valleys, it was never taken by force. Only the violent earthquake of 1693 managed to destroy it.

At Cava Carosello we can admire the centuries-old traces of man who lived in the quarry: we will see medieval tanneries and several water mills. The natural environment is characterised by holm oaks, carob trees and downy oaks, while the fauna consists of the rather obvious presence of porcupines, jays, woodpigeons, kestrels, buzzards, tree frogs and river crabs. At the end of the trail at the bottom of the valley, following the course of the river, we arrive at a small lake with heavenly colours, which is the envy of the small lakes of Cava Grande.
